Every employment journey is unique shaped by personal experiences, unexpected challenges, and the determination to move forward. At Accessible Employment Services, these journeys are at the heart of everything we do. My name is Rosanne Barlias, and I’m an Employment Specialist. In my role, I have the privilege of supporting individuals with disabilities as they work toward meaningful, sustainable employment. I also collaborate closely with employers and community partners to create inclusive opportunities where people can thrive.
This work is deeply personal to me. Having faced my own barriers in the job market, I understand both the resilience it takes to keep going and the hesitation some employers may feel when it comes to inclusive hiring. That perspective fuels my commitment to bridging that gap helping talented individuals showcase their strengths while supporting employers in building more inclusive workplaces. Through Accessible Employment Services at accessiblework.ca, our team works alongside clients to navigate challenges, build confidence, and uncover opportunities that align with their goals. One client’s story stands out a powerful reminder of resilience, determination, and what’s possible with the right support.
Helen’s Story: Strength in the Face of Adversity
When “Helen” (name changed for privacy) first connected with our team in June 2022, she brought with her an impressive background. She held a master’s degree in education, had extensive experience in the public sector, and was actively involved in disability-related committees. But behind those accomplishments were significant challenges. Helen openly shared that she was living with Muscular Dystrophy and navigating depression following the loss of a loved one. At the same time, she was a single mother, determined to provide for her two daughters while pursuing a new direction in her career—transitioning from the public sector into the private sector. From the beginning, it was clear that Helen had both the skills and the drive. What she needed was the right support and opportunities to move forward.
Building a Path Forward
Together, we began by refining her resume and developing a strong professional profile that reflected her experience and potential. With support from our team, including my colleague Richard, we worked to position Helen competitively within a new sector. Over the next few months, we focused on expanding her network and opening doors. I arranged informational interviews with corporate employers, helping Helen gain insight into the private sector while building valuable connections. She also connected with another colleague, Frankie, who provided additional resources and guidance along the way. Recognizing her leadership potential, we also supported Helen in applying to A Seat at the Table, a program by the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons that connects individuals with disabilities to corporate board opportunities. Beyond employment strategies, our work together also focused on well-being. I recommended the book Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn, which explores ways to manage stress, pain, and life’s challenges. It became a meaningful touchpoint in our conversations, helping us build a deeper connection grounded in both professional and personal growth.
An Unexpected Setback
Just as momentum was building, Helen experienced a significant setback. A fall resulted in a four-month hospitalization, temporarily halting her job search and adding new challenges to an already difficult time. During this period, our role shifted. While employment remained the goal, the focus became encouragement, connection, and support. I continued to check in, reminding Helen of her strengths and encouraging her to lean on her network of family and friends.Even in the face of uncertainty, Helen remained clear about her goals—she wanted to work, to rebuild stability, and to support her family.
A Well-Earned Success
Helen’s perseverance paid off. After months of determination and resilience, she secured a long-term position with the Federal government, an outcome that reflected not only her qualifications but her unwavering commitment to moving forward despite the barriers she faced. In a follow-up conversation, we also revisited her application to A Seat at the Table, an opportunity she was genuinely excited about. Her potential to contribute at a leadership level is undeniable, and her voice would be a valuable addition to any boardroom.
More Than a Job
Helen’s story is one of resilience—but it’s also a reminder of the importance of support, connection, and belief in what’s possible. At Accessible Employment Services, we see stories like Helen’s every day. Each one is different, but they all share a common thread: individuals with talent, ambition, and potential, working to overcome barriers and build meaningful careers. Our role is to walk alongside them—to open doors, provide guidance, and advocate for inclusive opportunities.
Creating Inclusive Opportunities Together
For employers, there is an opportunity to be part of these stories—to recognize talent beyond assumptions and to build workplaces that reflect the diversity of our communities. For job seekers, Helen’s journey is a reminder that even in the face of setbacks, progress is possible.
Together, we can continue creating pathways to meaningful employment for everyone.
