While those are certainly important, I’ve learned over the past six years that this work is about so much more.

Every person who comes through our doors brings a unique story. Alongside their employment goals, they may also be carrying disappointment, hope, trauma, resilience, grief, fear, or uncertainty. These experiences shape not only their career journey but also how they see themselves and what they believe is possible.

Over time, I realized that employment isn’t simply about earning a paycheque. Work is deeply connected to identity, purpose, confidence, independence, belonging, dignity, and hope. Supporting someone on their employment journey often means helping them rediscover those parts of themselves.

In employment services, it’s easy to become focused on outcomes, statistics, and measurable results. These are important, and they help us demonstrate impact. But behind every intake form, every resume, and every employment goal is a person navigating their own challenges, strengths, and aspirations.

Many of the people we support are living with disabilities, chronic illness, or the effects of injury. Others may be coping with mental health challenges, housing instability, caregiving responsibilities, financial pressures, discrimination, or significant life changes. Often, they are managing several of these realities at the same time.

These aren’t simply employment barriers. They are life experiences.

One person may be rebuilding a career after an injury. Another may be preparing for their first interview while quietly managing overwhelming anxiety. Someone else may be returning to work after years away from the workforce, wondering whether employers will see their strengths rather than the gaps in their resume.

Despite these challenges, they continue showing up.

That perseverance is something I never take for granted.

Success Looks Different for Everyone

One of the greatest lessons my clients have taught me is that success doesn’t look the same for everyone.

For some, success is securing meaningful employment in a field they love. For others, it’s enrolling in education or training, learning new computer skills, attending a workshop despite anxiety, volunteering to gain experience, or simply taking the first step toward believing in themselves again.

Progress isn’t always measured by a job offer. Sometimes it’s measured by growing confidence, increased independence, or the courage to try again after disappointment.

Employment journeys are rarely linear, and that’s okay.

Looking Beyond the Resume

At Accessible Employment Services, we recognize that meaningful employment support means seeing the whole person—not just their resume.

Housing insecurity can affect interview preparation. Chronic pain can make concentration difficult. Trauma can influence confidence and trust. Mental health challenges can affect motivation and energy. Financial hardship can shape every decision someone makes. Disability-related barriers may require accommodations or different pathways to achieving employment goals.

No resume workshop alone can solve these realities.

Sometimes what people need first is someone who listens without judgment and helps them recognize the strengths they may no longer see in themselves.

From there, we work together to explore career options, identify workplace accommodations, build confidence, strengthen job search skills, prepare for interviews, connect with employers, and create a plan that reflects each person’s goals, abilities, and circumstances.

Every journey is individualized because every person is unique.

The Moments That Matter Most

Some of the most meaningful moments in this work aren’t reflected in reports or statistics.

They’re the quiet victories.

A client speaking openly about their fears for the first time.

Someone realizes their disability does not define their potential.

A person discovers they have the right to ask for workplace accommodation.

A client smiling after weeks of believing they had nothing left to offer.

Someone is celebrating their first interview after years away from the workforce.

These moments may never appear in a spreadsheet, but they often become the foundation for lasting change.

A Personal Perspective

Not long before joining SCIO Accessible Employment Services, I experienced the sudden loss of my husband. That experience changed how I understood grief, vulnerability, and the importance of simply being present for someone who is hurting.

It reinforced something I continue to believe today: empathy has the power to create meaningful change.

Every day, I am reminded that people want to be seen not as cases or outcomes, but as individuals with unique stories, strengths, and hopes for the future.

My clients continue to teach me about resilience, creativity, perseverance, and courage. Many have faced challenges that others never see, yet they continue moving forward, adapting, learning, and believing that something better is possible.

It is a privilege to walk alongside them.

Why Human-Centred Employment Services Matter

Employment is about much more than economics.

It influences confidence, identity, social connection, independence, and how we see ourselves in the world. When people face barriers to employment, the impact reaches far beyond financial security. Meaningful work can help restore purpose, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

That is why person-centred employment services matter.

At Accessible Employment Services, part of Spinal Cord Injury Ontario, we believe every individual deserves support that recognizes their strengths, respects their lived experience, and meets them where they are. While employment outcomes are important, so is the journey that helps people regain confidence, discover new possibilities, and move toward the future they want.

Behind every intake form is a life story.

Behind every resume is a person with strengths, experiences, and potential.

Behind every employment goal is someone working toward greater independence, dignity, opportunity, and hope.

Sometimes the most meaningful work begins not with rewriting a resume, but by taking the time to truly see the whole person.

If you or someone you know is navigating employment after disability, illness, or injury, Accessible Employment Services at Spinal Cord Injury Ontario provides individualized support to help people build confidence, develop employment skills, explore career opportunities, and work toward meaningful employment.
